Tiktok

Our topic for the advanced contract is how diet culture is prevalent in society. We specifically plan on creating a tiktok, or series of tik toks on eating disorder awareness, body positivity, and health eating habits. Our target audience would be a younger generation, particularly people from the age group ten to twenty nine years old. After reviewing statistics on the age group that utilizes tiktok the most, we found that twenty five percent of tiktok’s active users are from the age group of ten to nineteen years old. This is followed by twenty two percent of active users being from twenty to twenty nine. Through this form of new media the goal will be to easily communicate to a young audience. By producing this positive and educational video. It can help create a better online environment especially since modern children are overwhelmed with negative and inaccurate  advice from online creators . Unfortunately there is an epidemic of misinformation online and by clearly communicating our topic this video can work toward fixing the issue. In the media, there are many sources that promote different diets for ways to lose weight or “make their bodies better”. Throughout these sources we have seen depictions of what a perfect body should look like according to these users and how other bodies should be worked on if they do not fit that ideal. Since our target audience is a younger audience, we want to make them more aware of the insecurities that may be placed on these individuals through the spread of false information. This form of media is a platform that reaches millions of people and can definitely change a mindset in a day. Along with these depictions of a perfect diet, we have also seen some harsh depictions of what it would be to live a life that is more productive and seems “aesthetic”. These aesthetics seep into the minds of the youth and makes them believe that their way of life may not be the best just because of like and view count on these particular videos. So how can we use this platform to help our audience recognize that all bodies and lifestyles are unique and wholesome?  Since COVID-19 began, we have seen endless tik toks of people trying to lose weight and exercising during quarantine to become healthier and achieve an unattainable body type we have seen all over social media from celebrities and models. Since the younger kids are the ones watching these 15 second videos, we can see how that will shift their perspective of what they need to look like and having a “different” body lowers their self esteem and creates body dysmorphia  and can possibly even lead to eating disorders. We can start take a step towards ending this issue one tik tok at a time by overshadowing the negativity by positivity on diet culture and body image.
